My wife Carole and I had taken our Shaker furniture business as far as we wanted by the time we sold it, which meant we had accomplished all we cared to accomplish in the world of furniture making. We had never been hobbyists, or makers with an aspiration for greatness and a lasting legacy. We enjoyed what we did for the years we did it: making Shaker furniture of uncompromising quality and value. We didn’t care if we made furniture that would someday be in a museum. Our goal was to make furniture people could afford and enjoy for years. It was that simple goal that made us happy and fed the fire. Another key component of our beliefs was that furniture should be made that lasts a good long while and we hoped the chairs we made would go the distance, from generation to generation (I sit on a 1974 prototype of the two slat medium back chair every day at my new day job at Selectwood in Portsmouth, NH. This chair has been kicked around for fifty years!), and for that reason we have decided to accept a limited number of chairs on contract for reseating.

A number of our former customers have been waiting patiently for us to return from our three year- non-compete hiatus to see if we might get back to work where we’d left off….no, that won’t happen, but helping preserve a dying art, and extend the longevity of a piece of furniture, that sounds good to us. We have made more than a few thousand chairs and the least we can do is reseat a few of them!
We haven’t completely figured out the logistics so a lot of this will be done on a case by case basis. We recommend an initial email inquiry to get the conversation going…again. I have posted pricing on this website that reflects the cost of reseating three types of chairs, and since this is more a project for us than a business, we imagine there will be some cases where we might not be able or willing to accommodate.
